''I treasure my four years of Speech and Drama at Peredur as one of the most important and formative experiences in my artistic career. The training allowed me to enter the English language in a living, artistic way. Without it I would not have become a writer in a language that is not my own. To me it provided a kind of artistic initiation whose results are an ongoing inspiration for my work as a performer, director, poet, writer and creative writing teacher. Apart from the obvious benefits Speech and Drama provides opportunities of transformation few other trainings can provide. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with the gifted, dedicated teachers of this programme, especially Christopher Garvey, with his high level of speech artistry

I spent a year at Artemis doing the Acting Course. It was an enriching and inspiring time. Back then I'd been trying to get into drama school in London but had been unsuccessful. Artemis was the more local and reasonable option for me, and the word on the street was that it was a small, but very happening and creative place in the beautiful Sussex countryside.

I think one of the main things I learnt at Artemis was to be open.In my opinion this is one of the most important qualities an actor can have.I was in a class with people of all ages and nationalities, and we were learning a wide variety of creative disciplines from a range of teachers. As an actor I'm constantly finding myself in unusual situations and places, being asked to do odd things, and this spirit of openness that was taught at Artemis has proved an invaluable tool in coping with those situations.

I feel the speech work at Artemis is unmatched by any of the institutions I have been in since. Never before, or since have I worked with text in such a deep and whole-hearted fashion. I was taught to really relish the English language, and I try to apply this to every text I work on now. I often freelance for BBC Radio Drama, reading stories and acting in plays, and I believe this is thanks to the deep grounding in text I was given by all my teachers at Artemis.

After graduating from Artemis I got into drama school to study for a BA in Acting. I know if it weren't for this enriching foundation year at Artemis, I wouldn't have gained a place. As a pupil at Artemis I was fully supported and encouraged to grow and develop in my own way. As a person, this was invaluable, and as an actor,it has proved fundamental.

To set down in a paragraph or two what my involvement with Creative
Speech has given me, both as a student and teacher, is challenging as the
richness of this experience could fill a book. For the sake of brevity let me
say it has enhanced my life hugely and given me a way of looking at the
world that is artistic, creative and sustaining. It has given me a relationship

with language that pulses with life. I am lucky to have come to this work in
my early twenties so its influence has been deep and has impacted on so
many areas of my life.
I was lucky. I already had a sense of wonder though even at the tender
age of twenty three the shine on that sense of wonder was dulling.
Working with language and poetry revived it and in the 28 years since first
encountering Creative Speech my sense of wonder has never faltered. If
anything it has grown and now inspires my creative writing.
In my work as a teacher and facilitator of creativity I can see that the
process nature of creative speech; the unfolding of language skill, the
gradual acquiring of artistry in the realms of speaking poetry, telling stories
and acting, are mirrored in the work of helping in the unfolding of people's
creativity.
So much in the speech training asks the student to develop positive and
true inner pictures. The imaginative picture I have when thinking about
what Creative Speech has given to me is - a rose. I was a bud with
potential though with weak roots. The day after day, month after year
process of the Creative Speech training dug the earth and grew the roots.
There was much patient watering. Much sunshine. It is a healthy rose now,
roots in the earth, petals to the sky. And thorns when there need to be.

When I went back to Greece, I had already in my mind what I wanted to do with speech: I just wanted to show shat I had learnt throughout my training in Artemis School of Speech and Drama – that speech can be alive, image forming and makes people more aware of who they are, bringing thus a real meaning to human encounters and not just information.

So I started by giving workshops anywhere I could: in friends’ houses, cultural centres and activities with children.  I also worked with kindergarten children for two years.  Then the work developed and led me to the Drama Department of the University in Thessaloniki and to the Kindergarten Teachers’ post-graduate seminar in Athens.  Today, I teach in the National Theatre Drama School, in the post graduate kindergarten teachers’ seminar and in the school for the Art of Storytelling, which was founded in 2007 and is related to Kea’s Storytelling Festival.  I also give private lessons and perform as a storyteller and Eurythmy speaker when possible.
