Christopher Garvey, Principal and Director
Christopher Garvey met the work of Rudolf Steiner when he was 21 and experienced a calling to take up the training in Speech Formation. Prior to this, he trained at the Bristol Old Vic Drama School. After graduating from Artemis School of Speech and Drama (formerly the Speech School), he worked as a freelance speech and drama teacher and performed numerous parts in Shakespeare. He began teaching at Artemis in 1985 and was given directorship by Maisie Jones as Principal in 1990.
Diana Fischer, Eurythmy
Diana Fischer studied Philosophy and Linguistics at the Sorbonne in Paris. Her lifelong interest in language and movement then led to an eurythmy training in Dornach, Switzerland under Elena Zuccoli. She spent three years doing post-graduate artistic eurythmy with Dorothea Mier in Spring Valley, New York. Diana has many years' experience in teaching both children and adults and is at present working as a freelance teacher, performer and movement therapist in the UK and the USA. Diana currently teaches eurythmy at Artemis.
Paul MacDonald, Drama and Clowning
Paul McDonald, BA (Hons), graduate of Artemis (1996), is a trained Clown workshop leader with the Nose to Nose team with whom he teaches clowning at a variety of conferences of students, teachers, and doctors. He has worked in special-needs communities for over 12 years, and continues to facilitate workshops and performances for residents and staff at several venues. He brings to Artemis students the essential elements for training the imagination and releasing their creativity.
Duncan Mackintosh, Storytelling and Drama
Duncan Mackintosh is a storyteller, speech artist, actor, director, and workshop leader. Born in South Africa, he arrived in Britain in 1975 after completing a degree in Philosophy and English. He trained in Rudolf Steiner¹s approach to speech and drama, and co-founded 'The Rose Theatre Company'. Thereafter, he toured extensively, performing Shakespeare, children's theatre, and Rudolf Steiner's cycle of epic Mystery Dramas among others. In recent years he has been working with Rumi, Kabir, Hafiz and performed with The London Symphony Orchestra and traditional musicians from Iran in 'East Meets West' at the Royal Symphony Hall. In the summer of 2007 he is touring his Rumi programme with Ashley Ramsden worldwide.
Gino Paccagnella, Drama
Gino Paccagnella has been involved with drama since 1984 as actor, director and teacher in the areas of stage, film and television. He has brought his life experience in the field to the renewal of the actor's technique from the spiritual foundation of the human being. His teaching of acting focuses on the use and development of creative imagination, empowering the inner life of the individual to true expression."Acting is the art of communion between people, at the very moment of 'creation' itself. This is an exciting dialogue/dance between director and player and text."
Josie Alwyn, English Literature and Reflective Writing
Josie Alwyn earned her Masters degree in English Renaissance Literature and Drama from the University of Sussex. She has been teaching English to all age groups since 1975, including A level students, and has deepened as a teacher through her considerable experience in teacher training. Currently she is teaching the Upper School at Michael Hall and is the Assistant Director of the London Waldorf Teacher Training Seminar. Her teaching at Artemis focuses on the evolution of consciousness through literature and drama. Students learn how to express their experience and understanding of text in writing that is both academic and reflective.
Vasile Nedelcu, Directing
Vasile Nedelcu graduated in Stage Directing from the Bucharest Academy of Theatre and Film and taught there for seven years, at the same time directing for different professional theatres. In 1995 and 1998 his production were selected among the best shows of the year at Romanian National Theatre Festival. He completed his MA in Aesthetics and Art of Theatre in 2001. In addition to directing the graduation plays for Artemis: Christopher Columbus by M. de Ghelderode (2004) and Exit the King by E. Ionesco (2006), he directed The Snow Queen with Taurus Voice, which won Best Family Show at the Brighton Fringe Festival (2005) and the Glasshouse Production, Peer Gynt by H. Ibsen. Vasile is interested in both classical and contemporary theatre and enjoys experimenting and combining the richness of theatre tradition with the freedom of expression of modern drama.
